What is a Learning Community?
At Middle Georgia College, Learning Communities (LCs) consist of linked courses where students earn 5-7 hours within the core curriculum. Students attend class, study, and learn with the same classmates all semester. Assignments are coordinated to create a cross-curricular enriched course of study. Special
campus events are held each semester that fit the theme for the current year. Professors may require attendance to these events as part of their instruction.
What is the Purpose of a Learning Community?
The purpose of Learning Communities is two-fold—to increase shared knowledge and build shared knowing. By linking courses, LCs seek to construct an educational experience that is not just an unconnected array of courses, but rather a cross-curricular form of study. Collaboration between faculty ensures a coherent educational experience, one that is intentionally structured to promote student education. This collaboration helps to ease the transition between college and high school instruction, with more attention paid to individual student needs.
Students come to share, as a community of learners, a body of knowledge that is itself connected. By enrolling in paired courses, students also share the experience of trying to know or learn the material of the shared courses. Students then begin to take an active role in the construction of knowledge and do so in ways which require them to learn together as connected learners. To accomplish these puposes, MGC has constructed specific
goals for LCs that are acheived by the end of the paired-course semester.
Is a Learning Community right for me?
If you are a first-generation college student, are unsure of your major, or just want to work in an environment that emphasizes teamwork, visit the Learning Communities tab at the top of this page. Or, ask your academic advisor for more information about Middle Georgia College's Learning Communities.
How do I Register for a Learning Community?
Registration for courses is completed through the
Bannerweb system. Students must enter the CRNs for the Learning Community courses in the "Add Classes Worksheet" simultaneously. This information can be found under the
Information for Students tab above.
What if I sign up for a Learning Community and then decide it's not for me?
If you drop one course within the Learning Community, all other courses within the community must also be dropped. See your program advisor for more information on this process.
What are the Attendance Policies for Learning Communities?
Policies vary from community to community, but as a general rule once the allowed absences have been exceeded (for one or all classes in the community), students will be dropped from ALL courses within the community. This reduction in course hours can jeopardize housing, scholarships, sports, financial aid, and graduation requirements.
